Vibrations during landing, ruts, and depressions can cause harm to the fiberglass in the Academy’s TG-16 planes, which is amplified on the natural grass landscape. The durable artificial turf reduces these hazards and greatly improves the life expectancy of the fleet. The surface also shortens the recovery and restaging time between flights and allows landing of more gliders at a time. According to the Air Force Academy, the airfield “averages more than 17,000 sorties and 5,700 hours of combined flight time per year.”

The 7.800 m² project was a part of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authorities (MNAA) Reconstruction of Taxiway T4 & S. This safety-enhancing application of artificial turf is the first of its kind in the Southeast Region of the United States. Artificial turf has been identified by the Federal Aviation Administration as a viable and more noticeable alternative to paint or other airport markings used to identify non-movement areas on an airport.
